Ambushed! Battle of Cadfan, 1257 AD

ENGLISH:

An English Knight is killed by an arrow in the neck while retreating through the woods near Coed Llaten during the Battle of Cadfan ([link] ) in May 1257.
As already stated, as it seems the welsh bow (the longbow) was shot point blank and could penetrate the majority of armours. The english will learn the lesson and will use the longbows with deadly effectiveness during the Hundred Years War.

The infantryman on the right is armed with an old style norman-like kite shield, while his kettle-helm and his gambeson are both based on the Maciejowski bible. The knight and his colours are inspired by an illumination of the Boldrey Rolls, a 1270s history of the English kings ([link] ), while his great helm is typical of mid-XIII century and can be found in the Maciejowski bible and in many other sources.
The knight sheathing his sword in the background is inspired to an english Apocalypse illumination made between 1255 and 1260 ([link] ). The great helm of the knight in the background on the right is inspired by an effigy on the Wells' Cathedral.

Un cavaliere inglese viene ucciso da una freccia nel collo mentre si ritira nei boschi vicino a Llaten Coed durante la battaglia di Cadfan ([link]) nel maggio 1257.
Come già detto, a quanto pare l'arco gallese (niente meno che il temibile arco lungo) veniva utilizzato dai gallesi a bruciapelo e ad alzo zero e poteva penetrare la maggior parte delle armature. Gli inglesi impareranno la lezione e utilizzeranno gli archi lunghi con efficacia mortale e rinnovata tecnica durante la Guerra dei Cent'anni.

Il fante a destra è armato con uno scudo ad aquilone in vecchio stile normanno, mentre il suo cappello di ferro e il suo gambeson sono entrambi basati sulla Bibbia Maciejowski. Il cavaliere e i suoi colori sono ispirati da una miniatura dei Rotoli Boldrey, una storia dei re inglesi scritta intorno al 1270 ([link]), mentre il suo grande elmo è tipico della metà del XIII secolo e si trova nelle miniature della Bibbia Maciejowski e in molte altre fonti.
Il cavaliere che sguaina la spada sullo sfondo si ispira ad una miniatura tratta da un'Apocalisse inglese, eseguita tra il 1255 e il 1260 ([link]). Il grand'elmo del cavaliere sullo sfondo a destra si ispira ad una effige Cattedrale di Wells.
