Lately I'm having extremely little time to draw what I would. 
Since it saddens ME not to publish anything for ages, I decided to open a new instagram page in which to post not only completed illustrations, but also the majority of what I actually do as an aspirant illustrator: sketches, roughs, W.I.P., studies, unfinished illustrations, dumped ideas. This doesn't mean I'll abandon DA, on the contrary I'm trying to share with you even more stuff than before, at a possibly more sustained rythm. If you liked what you saw - and will see - here, you'll probably appreciate what's behind it.

Ultimamente mi sono trovato ad avere poco tempo a disposizione per fare illustrazioni soddisfacenti a piacere, come fatto finora.
Dal momento che mi rattrista non pubblicare niente per lunghi periodi, ho deciso di aprire una nuova pagina su instagram dove postare anche ciò su cui impiego buona parte del mio tempo: sketch, roughs, W.I.P., studi, illustrazioni abbandonate a metà, idee abortite. Questo non significa che abbandonerò DA: al contrario, l'idea è quella di pubblicare ancora più materiale di prima a un ritmo ancora più sostenuto. Se apprezzate quello che avete visto - e vedrete - su questa pagina, probabilmente apprezzerete anche il lavoro che c'è dietro.

A place where even the sea froze; where war was total before the term even existed; where women and children were sold as slave and men were killed on sight, combatants, prisoners, young and old alike; where villages were burned and sacked by warring armies; where conversion to Christianity was obtained by the sword and where the converters could have had their hearts eaten out in pagan rituals. A place pillaged and raided by ambitious German and Scandinavian conquerors, vengeful Balt neighbours, treacherous Russian princes and by its own inhabitants. Welcome to early XIII century Estonia. Where everything bad you may have heard about the Middle Ages actually happened. It will be the subject of some of the upcoming stuff.

Dove anche il mare congelava; dove la guerra era già totale prima che qualcuno coniasse il termine; dove donne e bambini venivano venduti come schiavi e gli uomini, in armi, in catene, giovani e vecchi venivano tutti uccisi; dove i villaggi venivano bruciati e saccheggiati da eserciti in guerra tra loro; dove la conversione alla religione cristiana veniva ottenuta sulla punta della spada e dove i convertitori rischiavano di avere il cuore mangiato dai neoconvertiti in truci rituali pagani. Un luogo devastato da ambiziosi conquistatori Tedeschi e Scandinavi, vendicativi vicini Balti, pericolosi principi Russi e persino dai suoi stessi abitanti. Benvenuti nell'Estonia della prima metà del XIII secolo. Dove tutto ciò che di brutto che potreste aver sentito dire sul Medioevo in effetti successe. Sarà il soggetto di alcuni dei prossimi disegni.

What's up, you might be asking?
Well the fact is, the bigger project I am working for is not really a big deal of a secret... from a good while, apparently: that XIV century/GRR Martin artworks were and will be used for the Mount and Blade Warband mod, A Clash of Kings. The 1.5 version has been released from a while, but some of the drawings were already included in 1.3. I was told about it, but I didn't really understood the message, apparently, and since I haven't been playing good ol' Warband for a while, I didn't really knew about that. Until now, completely by chance, watching a 1.5 (!) version gameplay video! 
So, together with the pride of being part of another good, big mod, I also feel the brutal urge to finish a job I started too long ago. Shameful lateness is one of my terrible habits, you might have noticed. So, prepare for a good, solid medieval ride for the weeks to come!

Also, check out the mod. It has all it needs to have: eyecandies (interiors, exteriors, tons of armors, some taken from the tv shows, many not), characters from the books, a lot of new quests and dialogues based on the book (so no, it does not feel generic)...if you are into the saga, you will surely enjoy, otherwise, it's still a solid light-fantasy mod. Talking about spoilers: the mod is set just after the end of book/season one, so beware of spoilers. If you have seen all the seasons of the tv show, you may start the Night Watch at White Harbor without anxieties; if you haven't read all the books, never talk to Illyrio Mopatis. For the other artist involved in the mod, you should check out (but you'll probably know him!)
A lot of historically accurated or at the very least inspired, medieval, fighting men - with a pinch of modern warfare. Worth more than a visit!

Insomma, che succede?
Per farla breve, il "bigger project" sul mondo de Le Cronache del Fuoco e del Ghiaccio/Il Trono di Spade per il quale ho realizzato vari disegni a tema George RR Martin o trecentesco, non è più un segreto. Infatti, quei disegni servivano per un altro mod di Mount and Blade Warband, A Clash of Kings, mod basato appunto sull'universo di Martin. Non avevo ben capito, ma a quanto pare diversi sono già stati inclusi nella patch 1.3 - e ora siamo alla 1.5. Quindi ecco l'annuncio, che la mia disattenzione vi ha dato mesi dopo, per puro caso - ho visto un video di gameplay su youtube, l'altra sera. 
Insomma, visto che il lavoro è iniziato da un po' ma non è ancora finito, la morale è che nei prossimi giorni vedrete altra roba medievale, per cercare di finire il ciclo, con il consueto ritardo!

Consiglio, ovviamente, di provare la mod. Ha tutto quel che deve avere per sbattersi a scaricarla: armi, armature e oggettistica varia nuove e anche inedite, talvolta basate sui costumi del telefilm, una mappa che comprende sia il continente occidentale che quello orientale, nuove ambientazioni, tutti i vari personaggi, nuove quest talvolta legate alla trama...insomma, se già conoscete Warband, date un'occhiata a Clash of Kings. Il gioco inizia dove inizia quello che, nella nostra strana edizione italiana, è il terzo libro, Il Regno dei Lupi. Occhio agli spoiler, se non avete letto i libri non parlate con Illyrio Mopatis, idem se non siete arrivati al finale della quarta stagione del telefilm o all'equivalente nei libri, lasciate perdere la quest per diventare Guardiani della Notte. www.moddb.com/mods/a-clash-of-…

Infine, date un'occhiata all'altro artista coinvolto nella mod,  
Cavalieri e guerrieri vari principalmente medievali e storicamente accurati - o quantomeno ispirati a modelli storici e qualche sprizzo di soldati e guerre contemporanee, tutto fatto a mano.

1944 is a year well remembered by many countries, for different reasons.
For the Russians, that year marked the end of the siege of Leningrad; for the Poles, it's the year of the tragic and heroic insurrection of Warsaw; many others remember that year for the Normandy landing and the beginning of the Liberation of North-Western Europe.

But there's another story, between many, that happened in 1944. A tragic event that many have forgotten and most people, outside Italy, probably doesn't even know. A few miles to north of my town, Pisa, a small village lies in the mountains of Versilia. That village was the theater of one of the most atrocious massacres to have happened in Italy by the hand of Nazi Germany and one of the darkest pages of the dark years of World War II. That village is Sant'Anna di Stazzema.

I tried to tell the story of that tragic 12th of August of 70 years ago my own way, basing myself on both scientific historiography and the memories of those who survived. 

The story of Sant'Anna will be the first to be told for a new personal project on World War II, episodes from which I will illustrate, from time to time, with no chronological order.

In the next day, some new XIV century should return. After that, the longly postponed Danish phase of the Thirty Years' War.

Il 1944 è un anno ricordato in quasi tutto il mondo. Ogni paese ha almeno un motivo per ricordarlo: per i russi è l'anno in cui terminò l'assedio di Leningrado e quello in cui ricacciarono l'invasore tedesco dal proprio suolo; per i polacchi, l'anno della tragica insurrezione di Varsavia; per moltissimi altri è l'anno dello sbarco in Normandia.

Ma c'è un'altra storia, tra molte, che ebbe luogo nel 1944, una tragedia dimenticata per molti anni. In un piccolo paese sui monti della lucchesia, avvenne una delle più efferati stragi compiute dai nazisti in Italia: la strage di Sant'Anna di Stazzema.

Ho cercato di raccontare quella terribile pagina di storia attraverso la storiografia ma anche tramite la memoria di chi sopravvisse.

La storia di Sant'Anna sarà la prima di un nuovo progetto personale sulla Seconda Guerra Mondiale, episodi della quale illustrerò, di volta in volta, senza badare a un particolare ordine cronologico.

I prossimi disegni saranno invece nuovamente ambientati tra il XIII e il XIV secolo. Dopo, la fase danese della Guerra dei Trent'Anni, troppo a lungo rinviata.

Happy few and dwellers, here we are again!
It's been more than a year since I started illustrating the Thirty Years' War and despite my expectations, not only I haven't finished...I'm pretty far from the end. One year ago, I began to illustrate the conflict eager to reach the few parts I knew - the bloody years of Gustavus Adolphus in Germany, but along the road I've found so many places I needed to stop by, I'm not in hurry to reach any destination anymore: is the travel that really matters, isn't it?

These days I'm taking some time to read about the war during the second half of the twenties.
In the months to come, you'll see a lot of interesting stuff: we will introduce two famous protagonists of the war that since now I've only mentioned briefly, Albrecht von Wallenstein, the mighty general of the Imperial army and Gustavus Adolphus, king of Sweden.
We will see the rise of the bohemian general and the downfall of respected commanders, such as Mansfeld and Spinola. At the same time, we will follow Gustavus Adolphus in Poland and we will learn how he turned a poorly equipped army into one of the most fearsome and respected war machines of his time. 

Not only military campaigns: we will also assist to some of the most terrible witch trials in European history, we will see how a mighty treasure fleet was captured and we will begin to follow the terrible epidemic that struck Northern Italy: the Great Plague of Milan.

To give this reading a bit more sense, a little piece of capital M music from Germany, written in 1636, during the years of the war: the first movement of the Musikalische Exequien by Heinrich Schuetz, one of the most important german composer before JS Bach. I'm sure that its magnificent, tragic tones, will help you to get the atmosphere of those tragic years.

Felici pochi e passanti, eccoci qui, ancora una volta!
E' passato più di un anno da quando ho iniziato a illustrare la Guerra dei Trent'anni e, nonostante le mie aspettative, non solo non ho ancora finito...sono anche piuttosto lontano dal finire. Un anno fa ho cominciato a illustrare il conflitto desideroso di raggiungere le poche parti che conoscevo - i sanguinosi anni di Gustavo Adolfo in Germania - ma lungo la strada ho trovato così tanti punti nei quali valeva la pena di fermarsi, che adesso non ho più alcuna fretta di arrivare a destinazione: in fondo, non è il viaggio quello che conta?

In questi giorni, nel tempo libero sto leggendo degli episodi della guerra avvenuti durante la seconda metà degli anni venti.
Nei mesi a venire, vedrete diverse cose piuttosto interessanti: conoscerete due tra i più famosi protagonisti della guerra, Albrecht von Wallenstein, il potente generale dell'esercito imperiale e Gustavo Adolfo, re di Svezia .
Assisteremo all'ascesa del generale boemo e alla caduta di condottieri rispettati, come Mansfeld e Spinola. Allo stesso tempo, seguiremo Gustavo Adolfo in Polonia e scopriremo come, a partire da un esercito mal equipaggiato, il Leone del Nord costruì delle macchine da guerra più temibili e rispettati del suo tempo.

Non solo campagne militari: assisteremo agli orrori di due tra le più terrifibili cacce alle streghe, vedremo come una gigantesca flotta di galeoni venne catturata da piccole imbarcazioni corsare e inizieremo a seguire la terribile epidemia che colpì l'Italia settentrionale e che il Manzoni ha reso immortale: la grande peste di Milano.

Per premiare chi fosse arrivato a leggere fin qui, un brano di Musica con la M maiuscola, scritto in Germania durante nel 1636, mentre la guerra dei trent'anni era ancora in atto. Il primo movimento delle Musikalische Exequien di Heinrich Schuetz, ovvero il più importante compositore tedesco prima di JS Bach. Troverete, o almeno così mi auguro, questo brano incredibilmente atmosferico per una pagina di storia tragica come la guerra dei trent'anni.
