Although is it generally believed that Mansfeld was released from duty by Frederick V, which was worried by constant sacking of the general's mercenary - at his own expense - , the historical facts prove quite the opposite. Voices of Frederick V negotiating a truce with the Habsburgs convinced Mansfeld to ask the winter king to be released from duty, together with his underpaid army. War, as we have seen, was Mansfeld main source of income and only through constant warfare could he kept his army united. So it was the very Mansfeld who decided to offer his services to someone else: not the catholics, because he would have had the calvinists princes, such as the Duke of Brunswick, which formed a good portion of the army, against him. He finally decided to go under Dutch service: the endless war against the spaniards in the Low Countries had started again in 1621, and surely they needed help.

Mansfeld marched through Lorraine and Habsburg territories commanding a little more than a rag-tag army, with the constant fear of the pursuing Cordoba's army on his back. To hasten his march, he burned 200 baggage wagons and assigned the horses to his footmen - with episodes, as shown here, of two soldiers on a single horse. His so called armeè volante (flying army) sacked and looted, as usual, the territories it passed through and finally reached the border with the Brabant, at the crossroad of Fleurus.

To the protestants very surprise, Cordoba had reached the area hours before them. The bloody battle of Fleurus was about the begin...

Anche se generalmente è ritenuto che Mansfeld sia stato congedato da Federico V, preoccupato per i saccheggi perpertati a suo danno dai mercenari del duca, i fatti storici dimostrano il contrario. Furono le voci che volevano Federico V in cerca di una tregua con gli Asburgo a convincere Mansfeld a chiedere al re d'inverno di essere rilasciato dal servizio, insieme alla sua sottopagata soldataglia. La guerra, come abbiamo visto, era la principale fonte di reddito di Mansfeld e solo attraverso di essa egli poteva mantenere il suo esercito. Fu proprio Mansfeld, quindi, a decidere di offrire i suoi servigi a qualcun altro: non ai cattolici, perché si sarebbe alienato i calvinisti (come il duca di Brunswick), che costituivano una buona parte dell'esercito. Deciso infine di passare al servizio degli olandesi: la guerra infinita dei Paesi Bassi contro gli spagnoli era ricominciata nel 1621, e sicuramente ai Nassau non sarebbe dispiaciuto l'aiuto dell'esperto generale.

Mansfeld marciò così attraverso Lorena e i territori asburgici, al comando di un esercito di straccioni, con la costante pressione dell'esercito di Cordoba che lo inseguiva senza dargli tregua. Per accelerare la sua marcia, bruciò 200 carri delle salmerie e assegnò i cavalli ai suoi fanti - con episodi, come mostrato qui, di un cavallo per due soldati. La sua cosiddetta Armèe Volante saccheggiò e depredò, come al solito, i territori attraverso i quali si trovò a marciare e infine raggiunse il confine con il Brabante, all'incrocio di Fleurus.

Con loro terribile sorpresa, i protestanti videro all'orizzonte l'esercito di Cordoba, che aveva raggiunto l'area ore prima e attendeva l'esercito di Mansfeld, con l'intenzione di neutralizzare, finalmente, l'esercito di Mansfeld. La sanguinosa battaglia di Fleurus stava per iniziare ...
