Unpious St. Martin gets punished, Paris, XIII c.

ENGLISH:

St. Martin of Tours, is known for an act of charity during his youth: when he was a soldier, he saw an half naked beggar: he immediatly cut his cloak in two, giving an half to the poor man. In this drawing another young knight, adorned with a cloak, encounters a poor, old beggar but, instead, he ignores him for a fairy lady passing by. The divine punishment is upon his head.

The drawing is set in a place hardly recognizable today: the Île de la Cité, the very heart of medieval Paris. The island was still fulfilled with residential and commercial buildings back in the XIII century and the Notre Dame cathedral would have been barely visible from the narrow streets.

ITALIANO:

San Martino di Tours è noto ai più per un atto di carità compiuto in gioventù: mentre prestava servizio militare, vide un mendicante seminudo. Immediatamente tagliò in due il suo mantello e diede una metà al povero. In questo disegno un altro cavaliere, adornato da un mantello, incontra un povero, vecchio mendicante, ma lo ignora per una bella dama. La punizione divina è sulla sua testa.

Il disegno è ambientato in un luogo difficilmente riconoscibile oggi, l'Île de la Cité, il cuore pulsante della Parigi medievale. L'isola era ancora piena di edifici commerciali e residenziali nel XIII secolo: la cattedrale di Notre Dame sarebbe stata appena visibile dalle strette strade.
