The Wall of Westeros

I guess this one is pretty revealing on the "bigger project" subject, isn't it?

The Wall of Westeros in JRR Martin's "A Song of Fire and Ice"/"Game of Thrones", was built to protect the inhabitants of the southern regions of Westeros from the Andals raiders around 3000 years before the story begins. It's kinda like the Adrian wall built by the Romans in Northern Britannia, to protect the Roman area of the island from the Picts. The main differences? The Wall of Westeros is 300 miles long and around 700 feets/200 meters high and made of solid rock and ice (with the help of some magic). 
The Wall is protected by the Night's Watch, a military order with many stuff in common with the medieval Ordo Teutonicus. A black uniform (while the Ordo wore a black cross, the black being a symbol of humilty), no possessions for its members, fornication forbidden, and a cold, hostile, creepy territory to watch and protect against terrifying heathens. 
In the first book of the saga and in the first episodes of the TV show (so, not great spoilers I guess), Jon Snow, the bastard son of Eddard Stark, a noblemen from the North, is sent to the Night's Watch. He is accompanied by his uncle, Benjen Stark and the dwarf lord of the Lannister household, Tyrion, who wanted to take a piss beyond the Wall. He is escorted by two man-at-arms.

I'm watching the show, but I've just started the books. No spoilers, I beg you. Be kind.

Immagino di aver davvero sputtanato l'argomento del "progetto più grande", no?

La Barriera del Continente Occidentale, nei libri della di JRR Martin e nel telefilm "Il Trono di Spade", venne costruita per proteggere gli abitanti delle regioni meridionali del Continente Occidentale dalle incursioni degli Andali migliaia di anni prima dell'inizio della storia. Sarebbe più o meno un equivalente del Vallo di Adriano, costruito dai romani per proteggere la Britannia dalle incursioni dei pitti. Le differenze? La Barriera è lunga 300 miglia ed è alta circa 200 metri. Inoltre è stata costruita in solida roccia e ghiaccio (e con l'aiuto della magia). 
La Barriera è difesa dai Guardiani della Notte, un ordine militari per molti versi simile allo storico Ordine Teutonico. Abiti neri (quando i teutonici indossavano una croce nera, il colore simbolo dell'umiltà), nessuna proprietà personale per i membri, divieto di fornicazione e un freddo, inospitale, spaventoso territorio da difendere da terribili pagani.
Nei libri della saga e nei primi episodi del telefilm (quindi non è un grande spoiler) Jon Snow, il bastardo di Eddard Stark, un nobile del Nord, viene spedito tra i Guardiani della Notte. E' accompagnato da suo zio, già membro dei Guardiani, Benjen Stark e dal deforme Tyrion Lannister, terzo dei figli di Tywin e nano: quest'ultimo senza alcuna intenzione di arruolarsi, ma solo quella di farsi una pisciata dall'altra parte del muro. E' scortato da due armigeri (visibili alla sua sinistra).

Sto guardando il telefilm, ma ho appena iniziato i libri. Niente spoiler, per carità. Siate gentili.
