ENGLISH:
The drawing is set during the night between the 25 and 26 of February 1266.
King Manfredi of Sicily is interrupted by a scout reporting while playing chess with an unknown guest dressed in black, while a saracen guard patiently watch after the king.
The next day Manfredi would have met Charles d'Anjou in the bloody battle of Benevento, fought mainly on a thick bridge over the river Calore. Manfredi would have met his fate, charging with fury as many of his vassals abandoned him when the battle started to turn wrong for the Hohenstaufen. He died without his heraldry, not to let the enemy discover his death, but his body was identified anyway and tough the king was in fact excommunicated and couldn't have a proper funeral, he was honored by the french knights he fought that day by being buried under a pile of stones, so that his body would have been protected by the animals.
While the scout is based on the evergreen Maciejowski bible - that strangely shaped falchion as well -, king Manfredi's look and the carpet are both based on an illustration portraying the king in the so called "Manfredi's Bible".
The saracen guard, probably from Lucera, a prosperous muslim community in Apulia, wears a western european style gambeson with a slight eastern influence in its "X" pattern over a decorated dress with floreal pattern, based on a sicilian illumination. The unknown chess player dressed in black, well, he stands as a tribute to an old yet pretty famous movie set in middle ages...can you guess which?

Il disegno è ambientato durante la notte tra il 25 e il 26 febbraio 1266.
Il re Manfredi di Sicilia è interrotto dal rapporto di un esploratore durante una partita a scacchi con uno sconosciuto ospite in nero, mentre una guardia saracena pazientemente veglia sui due.
Il giorno dopo Manfredi avrebbe incontrato Carlo d'Angiò nella sanguinosa battaglia di Benevento, combattuta principalmente su uno stretto ponte sopra il fiume Calore. Manfredi avrebbe incontrato il suo destino, caricando con furore, mentre molti dei suoi vassalli lo abbandonavano al volgere negativo delle sorti della battaglia. Morì senza la sua araldica, per evitare che il nemico scoprisse la sua morte, ma il suo corpo venne comunque identificato. Il re, che essendo morto sotto scomunica non poteva avere un vero e proprio funerale cristiano, venne onorato dai cavalieri francesi con i quali aveva combattuto quel giorno con una onorata sepoltura sotto un mucchio di pietre, in modo da proteggere il suo corpo dagli animali.
Mentre l'esploratore si basa sulla sempreverde bibbia Maciejowski - come pure il suo particolare falcione -, le vesti di re Manfredi e il tappeto sono entrambi basati su un'illustrazione raffigurante il re nella cosiddetta "Bibbia di Manfredi".
La guardia saracena, probabilmente di Lucera, una prospera comunità musulmana in Puglia, indossa un gambeson in stile occidentale europeo, con una leggera influenza orientale nella sua imbottitura a "X" su un abito decorato con motivi floreali, sulla base di una miniatura siciliana.
