When darkness fell upon the battlefield, around 10.000 dead bodies littered the land. 

They lived, marched and fought together, friends and foes, protestants and catholics and now they were all united by death.

While generals and princes celebrated or cried in anguish, the soldiers' bodies were stripped of all their goods and thrown together in mass graves, broken and useless tools of generals' war machines. This was all the christian charity and all the glory their poor souls could get.

Stadtlohn was a decisive victory for the Catholics.

Tilly had crushed Christian von Braunschweig's army; although he was unable to reach Mansfeld, the latter had his payment cut and was forced to disband his army. Bethlen Gabor, abandoned by his allies, calls him out of the play. Frederick V, the Winter King, could nothing but sign an armistice with the Holy Roman Emperor, Ferdinand II.

But the war was still raging in the Netherlands and the skies over Germany were still gloomy, while darker clouds gathered in the distance. New horrors were up ahead, and most of the characters of our tragedy would not have survived another ten years.

Quando il buio avvolse il campo di battaglia, circa 10.000 cadaveri concimavano la terra.

Vissero, marciano e combatterono insieme, amici e nemici, protestanti e cattolici e ora erano tutti uniti dall'abbraccio della morte.

Mentre principi e generali festeggiavano o disperavano della vittoria, i corpi di quei soldati venivano spogliati dei loro miseri beni e gettati in fosse comuni, ingranaggi ormai rotti e inutili delle macchine da guerra dei generali. Quella fu tutta la carità cristiana che ricevettero e tutta la gloria di cui si coprirono.

Stadtlohn si rivelò una vittoria decisiva per i Cattolici.

Tilly aveva schiacciato l'esercito di Cristiano di Brunswick. Nonostante la sua incapacità di raggiungere Mansfeld, quest'ultimo, vistosi tagliare i finanziamenti, aveva sciolto l'esercito. Bethlen Gabor, a est, abbandonato dai suoi alleati, si era tirato fuori dalla guerra. Federico V, il re d'inverno, non aveva altra scelta che firmare un armistizio con l'Imperatore, Ferdinando II.

Eppure, la guerra infuriava ancora nei paesi bassi e sopra la Germania i cieli erano ancora tenebrosi, mentre nuvole scure si addensavano all'orizzonte. Nuovi orrori si sarebbero presto abbattuti su quell'Europa cupa e feroce e quasi nessuno dei personaggi che abbiamo visto sul palco della nostra tragedia sarebbe vissuto altri dieci anni.
