Rough Road, Serbian Ragusan borders, 1252 AD

The scene is set in the XIII century Balkans, during a brief war between the Republic of Ragusa (Dubrovnik) and the Kingdom of Serbia. A conflict of ecclesiastical jurisdicion between the bishop of Ragusa and the serbian bishop of Bar brought (it is said) king Stefan Urosz I of Serbia to wage war against the Republic. The same chronicle, written quite later than the events of the war, says that the Ragusians were pushed back into their walls.
The drawing is set on the rocky cliffs near Ragusa. Have seen the area in first person this summer, I can say it must have been a hell without asphalt roads. So in this drawings the Serbians are having their problems chasing the Ragusans and dismounted infantry are helping out the mounted nobles.
As can be clearly seen, Serbian armies were both influenced by Byzantium and the West.
The Serbs shown in this drawing are all based on XIV and, when possible, XIII century frescoes from various churches and monastery in former Yugoslavia, particularly Grachanitsa (Kosovo), with its beautiful and detailed warrior/martyrs saints and Milesevo (Serbia) monastery, with the classical evangelical theme of the sleeping guards at the Holy Sepulchre.

La scena è ambientata nei Balcani del XIII secolo, nel corso di una breve guerra tra la Repubblica di Ragusa (Dubrovnik) e il Regno di Serbia. Un conflitto in materia di giurisdizione ecclesiastica tra il vescovo di Ragusa e il vescovo serbo di Bar portò (si dice) il re Stefan Urosz I di Serbia a muovere guerra contro la Repubblica. La cronaca stessa, scritta molto più tardi rispetto agli eventi della guerra, dice che i Ragusani vennero respinti fin dentro le mura cittadine.
Il disegno è ambientato sulle creste rocciose nei pressi di Ragusa. Avendo visto la zona in prima persona questa estate, posso dire che doveva essere difficile muoversi in quelle zone senza strade asfaltate (e anche con quelle...). Quindi, in questo disegno i serbi stanno avendo i loro problemi nell'inseguire i ragusani e la fanteria è intenta ad aiutare i nobili a cavallo.
Come si può vedere chiaramente, gli eserciti serbi sono stati entrambi influenzati da Bisanzio e dall'Occidente.
I serbi mostrati in questo disegno sono tutti basati su affreschi del XIV e, quando possibile, XIII secolo situati in varie chiese e monasteri nella ex Jugoslavia, in particolare i monasteri di Grachanitsa (Kosovo), con i suoi splendidi e dettagliati martiri e santi guerrieri e Milesevo (Serbia), con il classico tema evangelico delle guardie addormentate al Santo Sepolcro.
