Description

ENGLISH (based on V. Chuikov, Battle for Stalingrad, A. Beevor, Stalingrad, the Fateful Siege, V.Grossman, A Writer at War):

It happened in October [...] The grenades shook the river banks, hit the fuel tanks and a stream of fire flowed into the Volga through our positions. Our command post was enveloped in flames.
The flaming mass burned everything; once it reached the river, the burning oil engulfed the barges anchored at the command post and it kept burning in the water, along the river current. It seemed that the river itself was burning.

Vassilij Chuikov, Commander of the 62nd Soviet Army

October 1942. As the desperate soviet 62nd army, fighting with tooth and nails for each and every inch of Stalingrad to prevent the Wehrmacht to reach the Volga, reinforcements and supplies kept coming across the river mostly by night, to avoid Luftwaffe attacks. As if crossing the Volga in the depth of night, towards the glow of hundreds of fires burning in the ruined city of Stalingrad wasn't harrowing enough, imagine what must have been like when the river itself caught fire...

On October 2, 1942, the german artillery hit the 62nd Soviet Army headquarters, located near the fuel tanks, in the area of the Barrikhady weapon factory. The tanks, thought to be empty, were indeed full. The burning lasted several days, with a towering column of smoke eight hundred meters high, according to Chuikov. The command post kept operating in its dangerous position up until October 7th, when it was finally moved into the Barrikhady factory.

POPULAR CULTURE:

A very well done visual rendition of a night crossing to Stalingrad is included in the not so great 2013 russian Stalingrad movie.

The movie actually features the explosion of the fuel tanks too, but then it had already fucked up great time. Too bad.

ITALIANO: (basato su A.Beevor, Stalingrado, V.Grossman, A Writer at War, V. Chuikov, La Battaglia di Stalingrado)

Accadde in Ottobre (...)

Stalingrad - proof that one doesn't have to die in order to get a closer look at Hell.
